Drinks with Fabio Alessandria of G.B. Burlotto

USQ welcomes winemaker Fabio Alessandria to the Salon for an evening of vini Piedmontese from his famed G.B. Burlotto estate. The great-great grandson of Giovan Battista Burlotto, a distinguished producer who supplied wines to the Savoy royal household, Fabio has brought renewed acclaim to his family’s holdings in and around the village of Verduno. Verduno’s limestone-rich Monvigliero vineyard is among the great Barolo crus, and no wines with the designation are finer than Burlotto’s. In addition to the Monvigliero, Burlotto produces elegant Cannubi, the Acclivi (a Barolo crafted with a blend of Verduno-based fruit), and a bargain-priced Barolo normale, along with a fresh, lively Dolcetto, Barbera, and Pelaverga. Obsessed: 2010 Azienda Agricola Cos Frappato
This natural Frappato from the Vittoria commune of Sicily possesses gorgeous inner sweetness, superb textural elegance and fabulous overall balance. Wild strawberries, sweet red cherries, flowers and mint linger on the high-toned finish. This is a pretty serious Frappato that stands apart from the vast majority of other versions for its density and richness. The Frappato was aged in equal parts cement and amphorae. -S.W.
